Two data files are included: Feuerbacher_Cohousing and Cohousing_Descriptive_Inferential_Statistical_Results. Feuerbacher_Cohousing provides the raw data for the study. Cohousing_Descriptive_Inferential_Statistical_Results provides the means and standard deviations calculated from the raw data and used in statistical analyses. Where an inferential statistical analysis has been conducted, those results are also provided.

Files/Folders in Dataset and Description

Two data files are included. In file Feuerbacher_Cohousing: Day 0 cortisol values, length of stay, change in cortisol (Days 1-7) and individual dog behavioral data. • Sheet 1 CORTISOL Day 0. Columns in order: ⁃ A) Dogs’ age in months ⁃ B) Sex (1 = Male; 2 = Female) ⁃ C) Spay/neuter status (1 = Unaltered; 2 = Altered) ⁃ D) Intake type (1 = Transfer; 2 = Return; 3 = Surrender, 4 = Stray) ⁃ E) How long dog had been in study (in days) before enrolled in study ⁃ F) Cortisol: creatinine on Day 0 • Sheet 2 CORTISOL DIFF. Columns in order: ⁃ A) Cortisol: creatinine on that Day ⁃ B) CORTDIFF change in cortisol: creatinine by dog for days 1-7 as compared to Day 0 ⁃ C) Individual dog number ⁃ D) SINGLEPAIR dog is housed alone (1) or with a kennel mate ⁃ E) Day is Day 1-7 of study • Sheet 3 LOS. Columns in order: ⁃ A) Dog is dog name ⁃ B) LOS length of stay in days until adopted ⁃ C) Breedtype (1 = Hound; 2 = Herding; 3 = Lap; 4 = Bully type; 5 = Working; 6 = Sporting; 7 = Terrier) ⁃ D) Age is dogs’ age in months ⁃ E) Sex (Male = 1; Female = 2) ⁃ F) Kenneltype is single-housed (1) or pair-housed (2) • Sheet 4 Dog-Dog Test results. Columns in order: ⁃ A) Dog is dog name ⁃ B) Day is day of test (Day 1 = Match Up II test prior to beginning of study; Day 2 = Match Up II test 2 weeks after start of study) ⁃ C) Score is dog’s overall Match Up II subtest score for that day ⁃ D) Housing is whether dog was single-housed (1) or pair-housed (2) • Sheets 5 (Bacon) through end (Zuzu): Individual dogs’ behavioral data. Each column is one video recording denoted by date and time of video. Each row is a different behavior. Numbers indicate the number of intervals (out of 12) in which that dog engaged in that behavior in that 60 second video. In file Cohousing_Descriptive_Inferential_Statistical_Results: Means and standard deviations for all measures collected are provided. For behaviors that met the frequency criterion for statistical analyses, the statistical output from the ARTool ANOVA analysis are included. Tabs that are purple are behaviors that did not reach the frequency criterion for statistical analysis and only descriptive statistics are provided. • Sheet 1: CORTISOL DAY 0. Columns in order: ⁃ B) Mean and standard deviation of urinary cortisol:creatine ratios for all dogs ⁃ C) Mean and standard deviation of log transformed urinary cortisol:creatinine ratios for single-housed dogs ⁃ D) Mean and standard deviation of log transformed urinary cortisol:creatinine ratios for pair-housed dogs • Sheet 2: CORTISOL DIFF. Columns in order: ⁃ B-G) Mean and standard deviation of the difference in urinary cortisol:creatinine ratios for Days 1-7 (in order). Single-housed dog data are on rows 2 & 3. Pair-housed dog data are on rows 5 & 6. • Sheet 3: LOS (Length of Stay). Columns in order: ⁃ A) Mean and standard deviation of the length of stay of single-housed dogs. ⁃ B) Mean and standard deviation of the length of stay of pair-housed dogs. • Sheet 4: Match Up II Dog-Dog Test results. Rows in order: ⁃ Rows 1-6: Results of ARTool ANOVA showing main (housing status and day) and interaction effects. Sheets that do not have this information are behaviors that did not meet the frequency criterion for statistical analysis. ⁃ Rows 9-11: Mean (Column B) and standard deviation (Column C) of the single-housed dog’ scores on the Match Up II dog-dog test on Day 1 (Row 10, prior to the start of the study) and on Day 2 (Row 11, two weeks after the start of the study). ⁃ Rows 14-16: Mean (Column B) and standard deviation (Column C) of the single-housed dog’ scores on the Match Up II dog-dog test on Day 1 (Row 10, prior to the start of the study) and on Day 2 (Row 11, two weeks after the start of the study). • Sheets 5-55: Individual behaviors (noted on tabs) that were recorded for both single- and pair-housed dogs. Rows in order: ⁃ Rows 1-6: Results of ARTool ANOVA showing main (housing status and day) and interaction effects. Sheets that do not have this information are behaviors that did not meet the frequency criterion for statistical analysis. ⁃ Rows 9-11: Mean (Column B) and standard deviation (Column C) of the mean number of intervals in which the behavior was exhibited per 1-min video for single- (Row 10) and pair-housed dogs (Row 11). ⁃ Rows 14-21: Mean (Column B) and standard deviation (Column C) of the mean number of intervals in which the behavior was exhibited per 1-min video across all dogs for Days 1-7 (each day is on a separate row). ⁃ Rows 24-31: Mean (Column B) and standard deviation (Column C) of the mean number of intervals in which the behavior was exhibited per 1-min video by pair- housed dogs for Days 1-7 (each day is on a separate row). • Sheets 56-63: Individual behaviors (noted on tabs) that were recorded for only pair-housed dogs. Rows in order: ⁃ Rows 1-6: Results of ARTool ANOVA showing main effect of day. Sheets that do not have this information are behaviors that did not meet the frequency criterion for statistical analysis. ⁃ Rows 9-10: Mean (Column B) and standard deviation (Column C) of the mean number of intervals in which the behavior was exhibited per 1-min video for pair-housed dogs (Row 10). ⁃ Rows 13-20: Mean (Column B) and standard deviation (Column C) of the mean number of intervals in which the behavior was exhibited per 1-min video by pair- housed dogs for Days 1-7 (each day is on a separate row).
